HOW TO ROB A BANK
NETFLIX
At Studio Orca, we created the animated sections of this Netflix true crime documentary.
We were approached by Lone Wolf Studios, the production company behind the documentary, to bring to life certain sections of the film that could not be covered in archive footage or interviews - in collaboration we were able to use animation to it’s full advantage and made it integral to the story being told.
The documentary follows the exploits of Scott “Hollywood” Scurlock, who carried out a number of high profile bank robberies in Seattle during the early 1990’s. Taking inspiration from Hollywood movies, he used prosthetics to create elaborate disguises, allowing him to evade the FBI for years.
With this connection to cinema, we developed a look for the animation based on Hollywood storyboards. Lead designer Juan Luis was able to bring a tactile feel to the artwork, with marking making and textures reminiscent of the non-digital preproduction art of the time in which the documentary is set. The challenge here was to find the sweet spot between something that paid homage to storyboards, whilst still proving accessible and engaging for audiences.
The film is now streaming globally on Netflix.
